The Scotsman: The Ukrainian refugee scaling new heights with fish-skin leather
Euan Peterson, from the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), reveals how the former student is forging a new future with fish leather.
In 2022, The Scotsman journal highlighted the story of Yuliia Buhlak, a former SAMS student and founder of Aquaculture Ukraine and the Ukrainian Aquaculture Society. Yuliia was poised to launch her innovative company, FISkin, which creates leather accessories from discarded fish skin. Her plans were disrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, forcing her and her daughter to seek refuge while her husband stayed to support the war effort. After fleeing to Norway, Yuliia found work, which helped her reconnect with SAMS. She secured a paid internship to develop her FISkin products remotely.
